Two men are facing charges after being caught on camera stealing copper telecommunications cables in north Houston on February 2. Robert Lee Morales, 38, and Carlos A. Gonzales Jr., 47, were recorded cutting and taking copper cable from a pole in the 7000 block of Merriwood Lane before loading it into their truck and fleeing.
A resident witnessed the crime and recorded the entire incident, which later aired on local news. Investigators, after seeing the footage and receiving an anonymous tip, launched an inquiry that led to charges against the suspects, who are currently wanted. Authorities reported that the suspects stole approximately 250 feet of copper cable. The following day, Morales sold 80 pounds of burnt copper wire at Alstar Recycling for $272 in cash.
Further investigation confirmed his involvement, as surveillance images at the recycling yard matched his Texas ID. Additionally, a black Chevy truck seen at the crime scene was registered in his name. Both Morales and Gonzales are now facing charges of theft of telecommunications cable.
