Houston police have shared new details about the fatal shooting of an inmate by a San Jacinto County deputy inside a Kingwood hospital room. The incident took place around 8:50 p.m. at HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood, where 34-year-old Jarmar Brooks had been receiving medical treatment before being booked into the San Jacinto County Jail. Brooks had been arrested on multiple felony charges, including aggravated family violence assault.
According to police, Brooks was already handcuffed when he requested that the deputy monitoring him loosen his leg restraints. As the deputy attempted to do so, Brooks allegedly grabbed the officer’s collar, leading the deputy to try and break free. Brooks then stood up, prompting the deputy to strike him multiple times with a baton while giving verbal commands to stop. Brooks reportedly continued advancing and grabbed the deputy’s collar again, causing both men to fall to the ground. During the struggle, Brooks managed to grab the deputy’s firearm, but the officer regained control of the weapon and fired multiple shots, fatally wounding Brooks.
Following the shooting, the deputy immediately called for help, and hospital staff attempted lifesaving measures, but Brooks did not survive. Houston police, along with the Texas Rangers, are investigating the incident, with findings set to be presented to the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office. Brooks’ family has expressed grief and confusion over his death, with his sister, Sherree Brooks, saying she received a call from the hospital informing her that her brother had been shot seven times. The San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office has extended condolences to Brooks’ family and has asked for patience as the investigation continues.
