A Harris County grand jury has indicted a 17-year-old Houston resident, Laith Adil Shehzad, on terrorism charges. The felony charge carries a sentence of no less than 15 years to life in prison.
The indictment is the first of its kind in Harris County under a new state law that criminalizes acts of terrorism. The law applies to individuals who commit or conspire to commit certain offenses with the intent to intimidate or coerce the public or a significant portion of it. Under this statute, the offense is classified one penalty category higher than the most serious offense committed or planned.
Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare commended law enforcement for their proactive response in preventing what could have been a devastating act of violence. “I’m incredibly grateful to our dedicated law enforcement partners for taking action to prevent what could have been a tragic act of mass violence against innocent people in Harris County,” Teare stated. He emphasized that their efforts have undoubtedly saved lives and assured residents that prosecutors will pursue the case with the urgency and integrity it demands.
Teare also extended his appreciation to the prosecutors in the Organized Crime Division for their commitment to the case and acknowledged the grand jurors for their service. As the legal proceedings move forward, Texas Times will provide updates on this developing case.
