JJ Hampton, an 18-time Women’s Pro Rodeo Association champion from Stephenville, Texas, is making her mark once again at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Competing in the breakaway roping event for the fourth year, she is aiming to secure a spot in the semifinals.
Hampton, a seasoned competitor, has seen significant growth in her sport over the years. “My sport has really grown in the last few years, and Houston stepped it up and offered us equal money, and it’s been amazing,” she said. Breakaway roping, similar to tie-down roping, allows the calf a head start before the rider makes their move. According to Hampton, once athletes reach the rodeo, it’s all about muscle memory.
Beyond her rodeo career, Hampton is also a real estate agent and a proud member of the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame. As she prepares for the next round, she remains determined to advance. “It’s a wonderful, exciting place to be,” she said, looking forward to the competition ahead.
