What is Lent?

Lent is a 40-day period observed by Christians as a time of spiritual discipline leading up to Easter Sunday. It is a time of fasting, prayer, and repentance, with many giving up certain luxuries such as sweets, alcohol, or social media. Others take on spiritual practices like daily prayer or charitable acts.

  • Meat is traditionally avoided on Fridays, with fish being a common substitute.
  • Sundays are not included in the 40 days, as they are considered days of celebration.

When Does Lent Start and End in 2025?

  • Ash Wednesday: March 5, 2025 (the first day of Lent).
  • Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday): April 17, 2025 (Lent officially ends in many traditions).
  • Good Friday: April 18, 2025 (commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus).
  • Holy Saturday: April 19, 2025 (some traditions consider this the end of Lent).
  • Easter Sunday: April 20, 2025 (celebrating the resurrection of Jesus).

Why Do Christians Fast During Lent?

The tradition of fasting during Lent dates back to early Christianity, symbolizing the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness before beginning his ministry. It is seen as a way to grow spiritually, practice self-control, and prepare for the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection on Easter.

With the Lenten season approaching, many believers will reflect on their faith while observing various fasting and spiritual practices in preparation for Easter Sunday.
