Authorities are investigating a shooting in Magnolia after a retired officer and an off-duty officer, both affiliated with the Houston Police Department, shot a man who was allegedly threatening a homeowner.
Incident Details
The shooting occurred around 11:15 p.m. at a residence on Knotty Oaks off Walnut Creek. According to officials, an unidentified man arrived at the home unannounced and refused to leave.
Feeling endangered, the homeowner contacted her father and a neighbor for assistance, according to a statement from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
Her father, a retired Houston police officer, and her neighbor, an off-duty HPD officer, arrived to intervene. While the exact circumstances leading to the shooting remain unclear, deputies stated that both men fired their weapons at the suspect due to the ongoing threats.
Investigation Underway
Deputies, along with the homeowner, provided first aid to the wounded suspect before he was transported to the hospital. He was last reported to be receiving treatment and is expected to survive.
The off-duty officer involved was identified as M. Malthaus, a 9-year veteran with the HPD homicide division. Per standard procedure, he has been placed on administrative leave while the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office leads the investigation.
Montgomery County Sheriff Wesley Doolittle confirmed that he and Houston Police Chief Noe Diaz arrived at the scene to receive a full briefing. The sheriff stated that charges are being filed against the intruder, who was found at the retired officer’s daughter’s home.
