Mardi Gras celebrations are in full swing in Galveston, bringing large crowds to the island. To ensure a safe environment, law enforcement has increased security measures throughout the event.
Attendees and vendors have noticed a heightened presence of security personnel, along with road closures and protective barriers.
“I think it’s gonna be smooth because some of the roads are closed and there’s a lot of dispatch officers,” said attendee Ryan Diolazo. Another festivalgoer, Jessica Dean, added, “I love that they’re there, and I just want ultimate safety for all the people to enjoy the festivities.”
Following recent incidents in New Orleans, Galveston officials are taking extra precautions. Local police and fire departments have implemented comprehensive emergency plans, using concrete and water barriers to restrict unauthorized access. Vendor Sabrina Packer commented, “We’ve always been really safe down here, that’s for sure, but the security is always here.”
Galveston Police Chief Doug Balli emphasized the importance of community awareness. “You will see an increased law enforcement presence outside. However, law enforcement can’t be everywhere, so the real eyes and ears we need are from the residents and visitors. If you see something, say something,” he urged.
As Mardi Gras celebrations continue, authorities encourage attendees to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
