A fatal crash involving an Austin Fire Department vehicle and a civilian vehicle caused significant disruptions near Austin Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) on Tuesday afternoon. Authorities confirmed that the collision resulted in one death and multiple injuries, prompting partial road closures.
Details of the Incident
The crash occurred shortly after 1 p.m. at the intersection of State Highway 71 and Presidential Boulevard, according to the Austin Police Department. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and found one person with critical, life-threatening injuries. That individual was transported to St. David’s South Austin Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. Another person sustained serious injuries and was also taken to the hospital for treatment.
Three additional people suffered minor injuries and were transported to Dell Seton Medical Center. The circumstances leading to the collision remain under investigation.
Traffic Disruptions and Alternate Routes
As authorities worked to clear the scene, traffic near the airport was significantly affected. Presidential Boulevard remained partially closed into the afternoon, causing delays for travelers and commuters.
ABIA spokesperson Kimmy Hey stated that full access to the road is expected to be restored within a few hours. In the meantime, drivers are being urged to use Spirit of Texas Drive as an alternate route to reach the airport.
Officials have not yet released further details regarding the cause of the crash, and an investigation is ongoing.
